Supernatural Conventions

Image
Settings Normally set within a suburban or very isolated location (eg: a large residential building) This promotes fear of the unknown and unwanted and intruding of personal space. Costumes The main protagonist is likely to wear casual costuming in order to give a strong sense of normality within the supernatural films. As horrors progress, we see these main characters start to look flustered, less tidy or even have blood upon their bodies to signify the horror conventions (blood meaning death). Light & Sound Profile lighting is used throughout to create a sinister look on a character, along with back lighting to display shadows and events in silhouette form. The under lighting is normally used within scenes where characters are in need of help and and portraying desperation. The typical sounds/music used within this genre is orchestral music which is implemented to fit the scene with empathetic sound to suit the mood of all the characters involved. The main...

My Chosen Horror Genre

Image
Supernatural horror sub genre is the type of bracket I want to focus on when producing a short horror film for this years  project. The use of the demonic and ghostly characters within the film and production is something that really draws this type of genre to me. I would really like to try within my horror film some of the conventions used within the supernatural movies just like 'The Conguring' and 'The Conguring 2'. The use of make up, costume and music within the supernatural films gives an amazing set up. Make up/Costume The use of this nun costume almost makes the character seem very innocent as the black and white outfit is worn typically by nuns who is a member of a religious community of women, typically one living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The use of the make up of the dark/black colours around the eyes as well as around the cracks seen on the face makes that demon itself seem evil and unhuman. The supernatural use of eye c...

History of Horror

Image
21st Century With modern technology horror films in the 21st century have become much more realistic, therefore making the audience feel even more fear than before. The popular genre of film now is psychological and demonic films such as "Annabelle" and "IT"   20th Century  The 1900s was a main section of horror films, theses introduced characters such as vampires, as well as Frankenstein. These types of films produced were considered melodramatic, this was due to their heavy plots that were then focused on romance, violence and suspense. 18th Century Horror literature within this century inspired many horror films of today. Mary Shelley wrote a horror literature which was then formed into a film that we watch today. This horror classic being one of the first, 'Frankenstein". I n 1910,  Edison Studios  produced the first filmed version of " Frankenstein".  Before the 17th Century The genr...

My Thoughts On Horror Films

Image
Do you like horror films? If so, why? If not, why not? I love watching horror films, I love the use of the plots used as well as the scary aspects and events which gives me an adrenaline rush. The feeling of a build up, with the characters feeling at ease as well as the build up made with sound which is called non-diagetic sounds. Non-diagetic is  sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect or even a set sample of mood music to create a build up effect which causes me as the watcher to get clammy palms because you don't know whats going to happen next.  What so you think makes a good scary movie? A good scary movie is made when the plots are set very unpredictably as well as the producer of the movie not fully abiding by the conventions of the typical horror story. This is so then as a watcher, you are fully sure of what might happen next, this is due to the conventions not being fully abided. I enjoy a very realistic horror story because it allows me to p...

Inter & Outer Forms & Locations of a Horror

Image
Some Conventions Used Within A Normal Horror Film Include photos of locations used - why used? & what does it give the effect?   The photo to the right shows a very isolated house that doesn't look in the best condition. The use of an abandoned house just like this one creates a tension just on its own. The use of the word 'abandoned' suggests no life or use which makes the audience question...'Why would you go in?' OR 'What if something is inside?'...These questions make the audience feel on edge if the protagonist enters the house.   The overall look of this house looks edgy and scary, the windows without light also gives a sense of something that doesn't want to be found is hiding in there.   A lot of horror films are started with slow panning within a gloomy woods/forest, just like the picture on the right. This is used to set the scene for the audience to basically explain that where ever they end up, it will be a very set back...

Most Controversial Horror Movies Ever Made

Image
MOST CONTROVERSIAL HORROR MOVIES EVER MADE I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE Meir Zarchi’s harrowing revenge saga was banned in several countries and considered a prosecutable “video nasty” in the UK for decades. See also: Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left. THE EXORCIST Along with the rumors of a cursed film set and the sacrilegious themes that forced Warner Bros. to hire bodyguards to protect Linda Blair, William Friedkin’s legendary film was accused of using subliminal imagery for prurient purposes. TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Tobe Hooper had somehow hoped his 1974 seminal classic would get by with a PG rating, but instead it was given an X and became banned in many countries.

Super Natural Horror Movies

Conventions of a Supernatural Horror Film - Insidious/Annabelle Typical Settings? Supernatural horrors tend to be mainly set in a big house in America, just like Insidious as it is set in a friendly type of neighbourhood. This set location makes it seem as if nothing will happen due to the busy type of location where there are neighbours to help. These type of horror genre films make it seem as if its actually real life because of its normal and casual environment (neighbourhood). Normal Characters Involved? Just like Insidious, the typical characters included in this type of genre is either a couple, or a 'perfect' family which then involves younger innocent children. Other characters that are involved at demons which are the ones who take other certain peoples bodies during the film. This genre also normally includes priests or a religious person who attempts to settle the demon of its haunting and tries to remove its demon spirits from wit...

Final Girl Theory - Carol. G. Clover

Image
Carol. G. Clover is an American professor of film studies, rhetoric language and Scandinavian mythology.  She has been widely published in her areas of expertise. Her 1992 book Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film achieved popularity beyond academia, and she is credited with developing the "final girl " theory within the book, which changed both popular and academic conceptions of gender in horror films. Androgynous in some way, she'll have a unisex name and is not sexually active. Meanwhile young women who smoke, drink, party and are promiscuous in slasher films are often killed off quite early. Clover argues they are being punished. Clover states that in order for horror to be successful - a female has to be terrorised rather than a male. It is interesting, in a genre popular with males, that there is a female lead. However, Clover argues she is masculinized throughout the film and that she kills the killer with knife or chains...

Horror Films Conventions

Image
These conventions were taken from a number of horror films that I have watched before. All the films include a type of isolated area as their main set or place of filming. This is to encourage the viewers to already sense danger & to feel as if the characters are already vulnerable which creates already an 'on edge' experience for the horror film. As you can see within the examples in the typical convention column in the table, they all have a very non-safe aspect which already gives a sense of danger to the overall feel of the horror films. The conventions used also give examples of what are used within the actual horror movies. The use of bad weather such as thunderstorm already sets the mood of fright, this is due to the flashing of the lighting, as well as the unpredictable thunder - these are sometimes used to connote that the horror film that viewers are watching might be unpredictable also. Another example of this is a forest which is ...

Slasher Films

Image
A list of Slasher films are: Seminal - Psycho Classic - Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Revisionist - Scream Parody - Scary Movie Psycho: This film is in fact one of few films which is set within the classic conventions of the horror genre which means it is expected that all conventions are included which is correct.   The location where the film is set is in a lonely out of the way location in the middle of nowhere. This location is used within the classic conventions because they suggest a sense of no help due to the lack of life outside of the house. Its far from the city in a quiet area and there is no neighbours near by. The lack of life means that any suspicious sounds wouldnt be heard.   The non-diagetic music used within the openning scene of Psycho is past paced and jerky which helps create the unease feeling for the audience to make sure that the movie is very unpredictable when the event/murder is going to oc...
