20th Century
The 1900s was a main section of horror films, theses introduced characters such as vampires, as well as Frankenstein. These types of films produced were considered melodramatic, this was due to their heavy plots that were then focused on romance, violence and suspense.
18th Century
Horror literature within this century inspired many horror films of today. Mary Shelley wrote a horror literature which was then formed into a film that we watch today. This horror classic being one of the first, 'Frankenstein". In 1910, Edison Studios produced the first filmed version of "Frankenstein".
Before the 17th Century
The genre of horror has ancient origins with roots of religious traditions, focusing on death, evil spirits, afterlife, the demonic and principles of spirits being embodied in people within movies. These were manifested in stories of beings such as witches, vampires, werewolves and ghosts.
