Sound - The Barn
Below is a list of the different sound effects that I used throughout the Short film - these are all Non-Diegetic Sounds (Characters cant hear)
I used an horror ambient clip when introducing the scene to the audience - this was due to the fact that the music was very dark and slow, I over lapped it with the same ambient when the whole of the sign was visible. This was to emphasise that the sign was something very significant about the short film. As the couple approached in their car, I used the Traffic sound effect, this was because it sounded like the car moving as I didn't want it to be quiet.
Throughout the POV shots, I wanted to emphasise that there was something looking down on the couple as they approached the property - the giggle seemed very innocent, but also very scary at the same time.
As I didnt want to use much dialogue within my short film, i emphasised events like the couple getting out the car and walking to the estate agent by using footsteps as well as the door closing (...).
When approaching the property, I used a Horror Violin which was a build up for the audience as there were little shots of the ghost within the property - these shown that the ghost was full of anticipation as it couldn't stand still.
I used the Door opening sound effect to cut the built up music - but then add a different type of ambient to set the scene within the property. I used the giggle again when a POV shot from above was visible. This was to let the audience know that something was still there.
When setting the scene within the property, I used the sound effect called Moving things - this really timed well with the characters putting wood in the wheel barrow.
When the character was going up the stairs, I used a creepy lullaby sound effect - this was to signify that something bad was going to happen. When the ghost was just going to make its appearance, I used the same giggle to make the audience aware that this was what was making the noise beforehand.
As the ghost becomes visible, I used the sound effects of a girl screaming, heavy breathing as well as a heart beating really fast - this was to understand the reaction of the character & to create an atmosphere. As the character runs out of the barn, I used the sound effects of childrens whispers - this was to emphasise that there are others within the house. To cut this sound, I used a effect called Door Close as she closed the door behind her.
When it cuts to the character still running away from the ghost outside, I used the heavy breathing and the heart beat to show that tension was still high. I also combined this with another ambient sound that was much deeper and louder.
When the ghost became visible when the car lights turned on, I used a horror ambient again to suggest that something was going to happen - I used the effects of the engine starting up and the engine running to make the scene seem more realistic. As the ghost approached the car at speed as they drove away, I used a girl and a mans yell to make their fears known to the audience.
As they were speeding down the drive of the property, I used crying and the car speeding up to suggest that they were trying to get away quickly.
