Reception Theories of Horror
Preferred reading- Love all of the content/messages.
Oppositional reading- Hates the content/message.
Negotiated reading- Like some bits, dislikes others.
Aberrant reading- Do not understand the content/message.
Effects...
The hypodermic needle model- The message of the horror film is understood and accepted by the audience. ('The Exorcism of Emily Rose' there is the underlying message of religion and Christianity.)
Two-step flow (Modern version of the hypodermic needle model)- The people who explain as well as diffuse the content to others. (Journalists & Movie reviewers who then write up content about the film, their opinions and personal ratings).
Uses and gratifications- People are not completely influenced by mass media but use the media to get specific satisfaction from watching horror films. (Adrenaline rushes or release).
Reception theory- When the meaning of the content is not related to the film but the directors have to trust the audience's culture competence and media literacy to understand. (Alternative films may not be a specific genre or simple story line, so the directer must trust the audience's intelligence and passion for film to understand what is happening.
Obstinate audience theory- Producer v.s the Audience. The audience control what messages they want to recieve and they control what the producers make because they producers have to work with what the audience want and enjoy.
