Anlysing a Supernatural Short Film

Image
WORKING LATE SHOOTING MATERIAL The use of the varety of shots as well as the variety of different angles used within different themes are really good at the beginning to make the audience understand the place in which the film is being filmed. Merged shots were used (2.50) - made it seem as if it was all a dream. EDITING Use of distorted editing effects (1.37) suggested that the film was supernatural because this editing made it seem as if the boy was a ghost. The red filters used when showing the demonic/supernatural character as evil because red signifies danger towards others.(2.27) SOUND Increased volume of sound & intensity (1.40) The use of the overlapping sound track with loops, it created an increase in exiety levels for the viewers watching. The use of the non-diegetic sounds of footsteps overlapped with an increased anxiety sound track. This added uncertaintly as well as it created a dramatic feel to the audience. This increase pace of sound i...

Sound & Editing & Camera Work

SOUNDS USED IN HORROR FILMS Diegetic sound  These are sounds that are naturally within the setting/scene of movies that characters can hear. These are used to make scenes within films much more dramatic and allows the level of realism to increase. Examples of these are... Footsteps Laughing Doors opening and closing Verbal communication Dropping of objects Creaking floorboards Sound effects Sounds that are accompanied within an action scene within films (eg: Psycho). A specific example of this is within the slasher scenes, the use of a sharp violin noise is used every time the knife is stabbed into Marion Crane within the well known major scene called the 'shower scene'. Ambient Sounds These sounds are used as background sounds, these are present in a scene to increase the realism of a certain location. The most common ambient sounds that are used include wind, water, birds, crowds, office noises, traffic, etc. Wi...

Green Screen

Image
As my selected horror sub genre is supernatural, I want to try and create a ghostly figure, this is to portray the overall sub genre well. By taking a video of someone in front of a green screen, I want to try and manipulate this into my filming production. This will make my film much more realistic and abide by the conventions of a supernatural horror film. To try and include this, I will experiment using the app Final Cut Pro. This app will allow me to pick and chose which scenes I want to incorporate this into. By using editing skills just like this, it will make my film seem such more professional and wont make it stand out as 'novice'. By using Final Cut Pro, I will be able to add and take away the ghostly figure within scenes, as well as making the supernatural character move towards and way from the character to then create effect as well as jump scares which will be complimented with sound effects and music tracks to increase the atmosphere. This Y...

Garage Band

Image
I use garage band to create an introduction to our horror supernatural film. The use of the scary, distorted sounds on loop. I moved around different sound loops so then they would overlap and create an effect to the opening set up of the film, potentially panning along to the location of our main filming setting. This panning combined with this introductory to emphasise the location being abandoned. I used 3 fusion electric piano loops, this was because it created a confused intro and I feel it would really set the scene well. This is because the electrical element makes it seem un-normal and disfunctional. The use of the small child giggle makes it seem very cyclical because a child is seen as a very innocent person. One of the main conventions of a horror film is targeting young children just like the one within the introductory music track. Within this garage band track, i have over lapped the contemplative track with a thunder roll, this i...

Idea Narrative

Image
Married couple, expecting a baby, buying a cheap house in a good area, shown by estate agent - stereotypically, the house is abandoned and is borded up as well as in a bad condition. They want to buy it as a potention project while the baby is on its way. They've moved far from where they're from, the house had previous history of being an asylum/hospital, the couple buy the property as they have no other options because their project was mainly to renovate an old building like the one they look around. As they begin construction, strange things begin happening - The couple start to see children in gowns playing, sounds of people in the house (crying, laughing, screaming). The female protagonist starts having night terrors surrounding something bad happening in the house (as if shes having visions) of horrible things happening to her family and baby while living there. The pregnant woman starts sleep walking around the house & waking up in different locations within ...
